The board had answers; the Bills had Thomas. Grade: F. The Bills torched the value chart for Xavier Thomas, taking him 84 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker. Landing Davis that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Xavier Legette
In No. 29 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick30
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In the 30th pick they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jonah Elliss
They jumped the gun on Jonah Elliss, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick35
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A swing that ignored the value entirely, T'Vondre Sweat well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick59
Rnd2
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 59th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick61
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
Value said wait; Braden Fiske in Round 2, Pick 29 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick65
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick97
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at No. 97 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in Round 3, Pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick129
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick 129 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick162
Rnd5
Xavier Thomas
They reached a country mile for Xavier Thomas at pick No. 162, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick166
Rnd5
Kingsley Eguakun
Kingsley Eguakun at the 166th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick198
Rnd6
David Ugwoegbu
A real head-scratcher, David Ugwoegbu in the 198th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick202
Rnd6
Isaiah Davis
A running back of that caliber at slot 202 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick207
Rnd6
Taulia Tagovailoa
They went early on Taulia Tagovailoa in No. 207, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
