Larceny in pick No. 197 lands the Bills a B, Smith-Wade and all. You could see the war room lean forward. Chau Smith-Wade at Round 6, Pick 22 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Baker pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In No. 28 they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick60
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in pick 60; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick74
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 10: Javon Bullard for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick128
Rnd4
James Williams
They paid sticker price for James Williams in the 128th overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick162
Rnd5
Javon Baker
They jumped the gun on Javon Baker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick197
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at slot 197 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick202
Rnd6
Brian Ugwu
A reach on Brian Ugwu in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick249
Rnd7
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at pick No. 249 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
