The Buccaneers let Mateer fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. The rest of the league will want that one back. John Mateer tumbling to the Buccaneers in the 161st overall pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In the end it comes back to A.J. Harris, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
A.J. Harris
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Pick54
Rnd2
Tyreak Sapp
Steal is underselling it; Tyreak Sapp at Round 2, Pick 22 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick122
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
A reach on DeMonte Capehart in pick No. 122; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick161
Rnd5
John Mateer
They will replay John Mateer at No. 161 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
