The Buccaneers answered their biggest question with Mestemaker. Grade: B. The Buccaneers spent premium capital on Drew Mestemaker, lining up the next man under center well before they had to. Luxury, maybe, but a defensible one at the game's most important spot.
If Carter pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On value alone, Washington makes the weekend a net positive. The Mestemaker pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Drew Mestemaker
Of all the spots to shop, they chose quarterback. Drew Mestemaker in pick 6 leaves running back for later.
Pick29
Rnd1
Will Echoles
In the 29th pick they get an anchor for the defensive front, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Trey'Dez Green
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey'Dez Green in No. 33. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick56
Rnd2
Kade Pieper
A slide stopped in slot 56, with Kade Pieper worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick62
Rnd2
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington at Round 2, Pick 30 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Lance Heard
A reach on Lance Heard in the 75th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Raylen Wilson
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Raylen Wilson, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick140
Rnd5
Cayden Lee
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cayden Lee. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. at the 183rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick220
Rnd7
Noah Carter
They reached into another round for Noah Carter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
