Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Panthers: B.

Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The Panthers never addressed cornerback, and it is the kind of gap that lingers. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

Reaching for Jones left real value on the table behind him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Franklin.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.

Pick Analysis
Pick33 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
The board had Troy Franklin higher than No. 33, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick65 Rnd3 Jonathon Brooks
Nothing to complain about; Jonathon Brooks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick101 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in pick 101 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick168 Rnd5 Brennan Jackson
No drama and no debate, Brennan Jackson went about where he belonged in pick No. 168. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick180 Rnd6 Christian Jones
They paid up for Christian Jones at Round 6, Pick 5 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick222 Rnd7 J.J. Weaver
They paid sticker price for J.J. Weaver in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
