Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA
The Bears let Stutsman fall and pounced. Final grade: B-. The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Danny Stutsman, the No. 85 name on the board, sitting there at pick 147 like a gift left on the doorstep. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If Rourke pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge in pick No. 33 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick39
Rnd2
Grey Zabel
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Grey Zabel. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
They took Nic Scourton at par in slot 41, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick67
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Fair-plus on Alfred Collins, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kurtis Rourke
They reached into another round for Kurtis Rourke, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick147
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 10 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick190
Rnd6
Rod Moore
You do not let a safety like Rod Moore reach pick 190 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick193
Rnd6
Miles Frazier
A reach on Miles Frazier in the 193rd overall pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at pick 233. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick240
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
