Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB+
The Browns bet the future on Ward. The board says D. Nobody had Jasheen Davis this high, and it is not close. The Browns reached 106 spots to get him at the 237th overall pick.
They banked enough surplus on Bryant to cover a lot of smaller sins. They have staked the next five years on Cam Ward, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Cam Ward
Cam Ward at pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick17
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at the Round 1 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick33
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
They let Walter Nolen come to them and pounced at slot 33. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94
Rnd3
Devin Neal
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Devin Neal at the 94th overall pick is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick103
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
They barely believed it either: Donovan Jackson still on the board at pick No. 103. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick116
Rnd4
O'Donnell Fortune
A straight-up fair deal on O'Donnell Fortune at Round 4, Pick 15, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118
Rnd4
Kobe King
They went early on Kobe King in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
Taking Jared Wilson in pick No. 165 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick181
Rnd6
Nick Nash
Steal is underselling it; Nick Nash at No. 181 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick191
Rnd6
Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt at pick 191 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick194
Rnd6
Tyler Shough
Somehow Tyler Shough was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 16, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick202
Rnd6
Cobee Bryant
Circle this one: Cobee Bryant at the 202nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
They will replay Jason Marshall Jr. at slot 216 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick217
Rnd6
Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant at the 217th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick234
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at No. 234 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jasheen Davis
A big swing on Jasheen Davis at pick No. 237, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick244
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
By-the-book stuff, Cody Lindenberg at the 244th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick257
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Value with a capital V on Torricelli Simpkins III in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
