FutureC-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for Franklin: D+. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Texans shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the Ford reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Franklin.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 39 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks in the 42nd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick59
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Circle this one: Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 27 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 123rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick185
Rnd6
Myles Cole
A premium they did not need to pay, Myles Cole a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
They paid up for Jaylan Ford at pick 188 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd6
Sheridan Jones
They took Sheridan Jones at par in Round 6, Pick 45, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick247
Rnd7
Donovan Jennings
They read the board right and Donovan Jennings was the payoff at pick 247. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick256
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus in No. 256 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick257
Rnd7
Tarheeb Still
Tarheeb Still slid further than he should have, and the 257th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
