FutureB-
The Browns won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B. There is reaching, and then there is Seth Henigan at the 256th overall pick. The Browns jumped the board by 184 and dared it to prove them wrong.
Getting Bassa where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
The Browns indulged a want in Carter while a need in cornerback stayed open.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 6th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at slot 34 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick37
Rnd2
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at pick 37 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
No edge and no loss on Xavier Watts in Round 2, Pick 12; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick65
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
Somehow Kaleb Johnson was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick67
Rnd3
Will Howard
They talked themselves into Will Howard at pick No. 67, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at slot 76 for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ty Robinson
A wild overpay on Ty Robinson in Round 3, Pick 30, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick102
Rnd4
Barrett Carter
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 102nd pick on Barrett Carter with cornerback unsolved.
Pick103
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
They paid a round early for Cam Skattebo in pick 103, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in pick No. 163 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick168
Rnd5
Tyler Batty
They reached into another round for Tyler Batty, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177
Rnd6
Anthony Belton
They left a pile of value on the table to take Anthony Belton this early at No. 177. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick190
Rnd6
Hunter Wohler
Hunter Wohler in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick198
Rnd6
Jimmy Horn Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jimmy Horn Jr. in the 198th pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick214
Rnd6
Aaron Lewis
A real head-scratcher, Aaron Lewis in the 214th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser in pick No. 215 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick219
Rnd7
Trey Wedig
Trey Wedig at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick256
Rnd7
Seth Henigan
Seth Henigan at Round 7, Pick 40 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
