Henderson should have been long gone. The Browns pounced, and earned a B-. Thirty-one other rooms let TreVeyon Henderson slide, and the Browns were the ones holding the card at slot 85. Highway robbery. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. It is not that Campbell is a bad player; it is that the Browns had louder needs to answer first. The cost of the Gabriel reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a ballhawk on the back end. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in No. 33 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They will replay Tyler Warren at pick 44 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick51
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
A curious use of slot 51. Edge rusher and cornerback needed the pick; a linebacker in Jihaad Campbell did not.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
The board had Jayden Higgins higher than the 67th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick85
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
They went early on Cam Skattebo in pick No. 94, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick104
Rnd4
Dillon Gabriel
Dillon Gabriel at the 104th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick179
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick191
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
A reasonable price with a little left over, JJ Pegues in Round 6, Pick 15. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick192
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 192, where Dont'e Thornton Jr. graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick200
Rnd6
Jaydon Blue
Circle this one: Jaydon Blue at slot 200 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick216
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at the 216th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick255
Rnd7
Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith in No. 255 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
