Draft Grade — Bills
Overall C

Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Bills: C.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Bills took Cal Haladay a full 267 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.

The Strong value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Linebacker was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

Hit on Maxwell Hairston and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Maxwell Hairston
In the 30th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, a steep price for the projection.
Pick56 Rnd2 Ozzy Trapilo
Value said wait; Ozzy Trapilo in slot 56 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick62 Rnd2 Shemar Turner
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shemar Turner this early at the 62nd pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick109 Rnd4 Deone Walker
Deone Walker in No. 109 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick132 Rnd4 Cal Haladay
Cal Haladay at Round 4, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169 Rnd5 Jaylin Smith
Jaylin Smith at pick No. 169 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick170 Rnd5 Jordan Hancock
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Hancock in pick No. 170 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick173 Rnd5 Jackson Hawes
A wild overpay on Jackson Hawes in pick 173, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Pick177 Rnd6 Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong in slot 177 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick206 Rnd6 Mason Cobb
They reached into another round for Mason Cobb, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
