The Browns worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. Nobody else had Jalen Catalon anywhere near the 248th overall pick. The Browns did, by 48 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher and tight end went begging.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Branch pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In pick 24 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick39
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A tidy little value on Dillon Thieneman in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick40
Rnd2
Dontay Corleone
Dontay Corleone at the 40th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick70
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at pick No. 70 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick74
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
A tidy bit of business in the 74th overall pick, where Zachariah Branch graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick107
Rnd4
Harold Perkins Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 107th overall pick on Harold Perkins Jr. with edge rusher and tight end unsolved.
Pick112
Rnd4
Drew Allar
A wild overpay on Drew Allar in slot 112, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick146
Rnd5
Kaleb Proctor
Value with a capital V on Kaleb Proctor in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick148
Rnd5
Dametrious Crownover
A clean, defensible pick in the 148th pick with a little surplus value in Dametrious Crownover. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jaeden Roberts
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaeden Roberts. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jadon Canady
A reach for Jadon Canady in pick No. 206; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jalen Catalon
Value said wait; Jalen Catalon in pick 248 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
