You build a draft on nights like this. Jake Slaughter had no business being available in pick No. 72, and the Browns did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They will need Kearney to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
