Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall
C+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB
The Broncos found their guy under center in McCarthy: C+. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Broncos' quarterback, full stop. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Dion Dawkins deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 32 they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him.
Pick43
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They did well to land Chris Braswell in slot 43, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
They let Javon Bullard come to them and pounced at pick 76. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tyler Davis
They paid sticker price for Tyler Davis in the 99th overall pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick124
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at No. 124 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick129
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray is a better player than the 129th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick130
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara at Round 4, Pick 30 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd5
Javon Foster
Nothing to complain about; Javon Foster went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick149
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
A tidy bit of business in the 149th overall pick, where Javion Cohen graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
