FutureB
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B+. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Getting McConkey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
Marvin Harrison Jr. in pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the 4th pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In No. 21 they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick82
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in the 82nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick104
Rnd4
Ladd McConkey
Ladd McConkey in Round 4, Pick 4 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Kiran Amegadjie
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 4 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick132
Rnd4
Zach Frazier
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in pick No. 132, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick155
Rnd5
Cade Stover
Cade Stover in slot 155 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick169
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland slid further than he should have, and pick 169 is lovely value for the edge rusher. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd6
BJ Mayes
A quiet steal in pick No. 182: BJ Mayes for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick204
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at the 204th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick225
Rnd7
Nelson Ceaser
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Nelson Ceaser in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
