A franchise passer in Maye headlines a A- weekend for the Bears. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Mayes makes the weekend a net positive.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
No drama and no debate, Drake Maye went about where he belonged in the Round 1 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick21
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In No. 21 they get a bendy edge with upside at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick48
Rnd2
Javon Foster
They took Javon Foster at par in pick No. 48, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick49
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 49th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick68
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Denzel Burke at pick 68 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton slid further than he should have, and slot 71 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It fills a real need, too.
Pick104
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in Round 4, Pick 4 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Jamon Dumas-Johnson at the 132nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick136
Rnd4
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at pick 136 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick141
Rnd5
AJ Barner
A reasonable price with a little left over, AJ Barner in the 141st pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick182
Rnd6
BJ Mayes
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing BJ Mayes in the Round 6 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick218
Rnd6
Dominic Lovett
Dominic Lovett in Round 6, Pick 43 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick225
Rnd7
Tyler Batty
Tyler Batty at the 225th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
