FutureA+
The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B+. The 49ers bet big and early on Eric O'Neill, 46 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
However the rest shakes out, Taaffe at that price is a win they earned. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick58
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
Value with a capital V on Lee Hunter in pick No. 58, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick95
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
You do not let a safety like Michael Taaffe reach No. 95 and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
Keylan Rutledge is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Taking Tacario Davis in the 131st overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick133
Rnd4
Eli Raridon
Eli Raridon at pick 133 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick138
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
Parker Brailsford slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 38 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139
Rnd4
Kevin Coleman Jr.
Value said wait; Kevin Coleman Jr. in No. 139 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick212
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
Eric O'Neill at pick No. 212 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
