Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Cowboys: B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent Round 7, Pick 31 on Xavier Truss, a name the board had a full 44 spots lower. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
On value alone, McCord makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In pick No. 18 they get a bell-cow for the offense at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
They did well to land Jihaad Campbell in pick 44, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Steal is underselling it; Jayden Higgins at Round 3, Pick 12 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick92
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Alexander. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Circle this one: Denzel Burke at No. 137 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Kyle McCord
Taking Kyle McCord in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick174
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
No edge and no loss on Willie Lampkin in the 174th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed slipping to pick No. 204 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in slot 239 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss in pick 247 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
