Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Ethan Downs in the 252nd overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

On value alone, Edwards makes the weekend a net positive. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Armand Membou
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in the 44th pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in Round 3, Pick 11 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick100 Rnd3 Kevin Winston Jr.
Fair-plus on Kevin Winston Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at slot 113 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
They paid a round early for Luke Kandra in pick 138, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick149 Rnd5 Mitchell Evans
Mitchell Evans in Round 5, Pick 11 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick160 Rnd5 Tommi Hill
A tidy little value on Tommi Hill in pick 160, a step better than break-even. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick171 Rnd5 Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at No. 171 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227 Rnd7 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in the 227th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick236 Rnd7 Ja'Corey Brooks
Ja'Corey Brooks at the 236th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick241 Rnd7 Akili Arnold
Taking Akili Arnold in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick249 Rnd7 Torricelli Simpkins III
They paid up for Torricelli Simpkins III at slot 249 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252 Rnd7 Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs in pick No. 252 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
