Monkian79 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B

FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Ersery: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Aireontae Ersery got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at the 113th overall pick. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Reaching for McLaughlin left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kelvin Banks Jr.
Kelvin Banks Jr. in the 43rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Benjamin Morrison
Steal is underselling it; Benjamin Morrison at pick No. 75 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
No edge and no loss on Dylan Fairchild in No. 100; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113
Rnd4
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in pick 113 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd4
Seth McLaughlin
Value said wait; Seth McLaughlin in the 138th overall pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke Kandra. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick160
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
They went early on Willie Lampkin in slot 160, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings in pick No. 227 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249
Rnd7
Karene Reid
The board fumbled Karene Reid all the way to the 249th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252
Rnd7
Zeek Biggers
Fair-plus on Zeek Biggers, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
