You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. Reese at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
