Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Chargers, and a B- to prove it.

The tape said wait; the Chargers did not. Jackson Hawes went at the 214th pick, a good 42 picks before the board was ready. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Omarion Hampton
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a three-down runner. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick55 Rnd2 Tre Harris
By-the-book stuff, Tre Harris at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick62 Rnd2 Mason Taylor
They paid up for Mason Taylor at pick No. 62 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick86 Rnd3 Kevin Winston Jr.
They jumped the gun on Kevin Winston Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick125 Rnd4 Oluwafemi Oladejo
They went early on Oluwafemi Oladejo in pick 125, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick158 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
A conviction pick on Kyle Williams at the 158th pick that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick169 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
A reach for JJ Pegues in Round 5, Pick 31; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick181 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick199 Rnd6 Cam Jackson
A big swing on Cam Jackson at the 199th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209 Rnd6 Ahmed Hassanein
Ahmed Hassanein in pick 209 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick214 Rnd6 Jackson Hawes
A wild overpay on Jackson Hawes in the 214th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick256 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at No. 256 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
