Grand theft in Round 7, Pick 20: the Steelers steal Wallace and grade out a B. The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Caedan Wallace, the No. 213 name on the board, in pick 240. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. With interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. They are betting Wallace proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 27 they get a long-term starter on the line. More want than need.
Pick65
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Kiran Amegadjie in the 65th overall pick leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
Pick84
Rnd3
Max Melton
Max Melton at slot 84 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Javon Baker
No drama and no debate, Javon Baker went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 27. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick92
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Khyree Jackson in pick 92. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick98
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Christian Mahogany adds an offensive lineman while interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick101
Rnd4
Maason Smith
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots still to address, they spent No. 101 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop is a better player than the 119th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick120
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A tidy little value on Cedric Gray in the 120th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
They did well to land Spencer Rattler in No. 125, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick126
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Christian Jones adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots untouched.
Pick127
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in slot 127, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick161
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
No edge and no loss on Khristian Boyd in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220
Rnd6
Trevin Wallace
They went early on Trevin Wallace in Round 6, Pick 45, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick226
Rnd7
Garret Greenfield
Value with a capital V on Garret Greenfield in pick No. 226, a genuine coup. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick238
Rnd7
Bub Means
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bub Means. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick240
Rnd7
Caedan Wallace
The board fumbled Caedan Wallace all the way to slot 240, and they scooped it up. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
