Draft Grade — Steelers

The Steelers robbed the room for King. Final grade: B-. The real work happened on the phones. The Steelers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
On value alone, King makes the weekend a net positive. The Powers-Johnson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In No. 20 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. More want than need.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A curious use of the 44th pick. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Jackson Powers-Johnson did not.
Pick52
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick67
Rnd3
Kalen King
Somehow Kalen King was still sitting there in slot 67, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77
Rnd3
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan in pick 77 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
A reach on Cole Bishop in pick No. 121; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick198
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
No edge and no loss on JD Bertrand in slot 198; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at the 238th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
