Draft Grade — Steelers

The Steelers robbed the room for Nix. Final grade: B-. The Steelers ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Nix. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. It is not that Powers-Johnson is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first.
The Powers-Johnson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In pick No. 20 they get protection for the quarterback. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A curious use of pick 35. Safety, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Jackson Powers-Johnson did not.
Pick52
Rnd2
Bo Nix
Bo Nix at slot 52 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick84
Rnd3
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in Round 3, Pick 20 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick104
Rnd4
DeWayne Carter
DeWayne Carter at the Round 4 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick120
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at the 120th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
Good price on Ainias Smith in pick 121, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140
Rnd5
Malik Washington
You do not let a wide receiver like Malik Washington reach No. 140 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick198
Rnd6
Austin Stogner
No drama and no debate, Austin Stogner went about where he belonged in the 198th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick241
Rnd7
Donovan Jennings
They took Donovan Jennings at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
