The Steelers let Williams fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Isaiah Williams had no business being available in the 238th overall pick, and the Steelers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Steelers indulged a want in Frazier while a need in quarterback, edge rusher and other spots stayed open. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
The cost of the Frazier reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick52
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Zach Frazier adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Pick87
Rnd3
McKinnley Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on McKinnley Jackson at the 87th pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120
Rnd4
Max Melton
Nice patience on Max Melton, who had no business lasting to the 120th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Beau Brade
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Beau Brade in pick No. 121. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in No. 125 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick198
Rnd6
Javon Baker
They read the board right and Javon Baker was the payoff at slot 198. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238
Rnd7
Isaiah Williams
The board fumbled Isaiah Williams all the way to Round 7, Pick 18, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
