The Steelers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. The Luke McCaffrey selection is the head-turner. The Steelers reached 26 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The Frazier pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots still on the board. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In the 31st pick they get a cornerstone up front. More want than need.
Pick51
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 51 on Zach Frazier with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots unsolved.
Pick63
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 31. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick98
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Nothing to complain about; Khyree Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick123
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
This one needs a full-page explanation: Luke McCaffrey in No. 123, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick178
Rnd6
Khristian Boyd
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Khristian Boyd. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick188
Rnd6
Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at No. 188 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick195
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at the 195th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
