FutureB-
The Steelers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Steelers reached some 31 spots for Frank Gore Jr., and value like that does not grow back. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots went begging. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In slot 20 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sedrick Van Pran in No. 51, miles early. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick86
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They jumped the gun on Brenden Rice, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick99
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 99th overall pick on Matt Goncalves with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots unsolved.
Pick119
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
They paid up for Jarrian Jones at pick 119 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick156
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Khristian Boyd well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick178
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
A wild overpay on Joe Milton III in Round 6, Pick 3, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick188
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
A premium they did not need to pay, Curtis Jacobs a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Gore Jr. in pick 195 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
