FutureB
Larceny in pick No. 218 lands the Steelers a B, Johnson and all. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Steelers watched Cornelius Johnson slide 30 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
It is not that Van Pran is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Reaching for Smith left real value on the table behind him.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a building block for the line. More want than need.
Pick61
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
A want over a need in the 61st overall pick: Sedrick Van Pran adds an offensive lineman while quarterback, safety and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick93
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Pick98
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They went early on Maason Smith in the 98th pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick119
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
They did well to land Elijah Jones in slot 119, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick130
Rnd4
Josh Newton
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Newton at pick 130 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick164
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
The board had Jacob Cowing higher than No. 164, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick165
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
A conviction pick on Khristian Boyd at pick No. 165 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick178
Rnd6
Dillon Johnson
Nice patience on Dillon Johnson, who had no business lasting to pick No. 178. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
No edge and no loss on Steele Chambers in the 195th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick218
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
