The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B-. The 49ers did not so much draft Erick All as overpay for him, 71 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Johnson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The 49ers indulged a want in Jones while a need in quarterback and linebacker stayed open.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick48
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ruke Orhorhoro this early at slot 48. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
They went early on Sedrick Van Pran in Round 2, Pick 31, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Andru Phillips
A conviction pick on Andru Phillips at the 94th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick124
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
They paid a round early for Roger Rosengarten in the Round 4 slot, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Erick All
Erick All in the 131st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and linebacker to take Elijah Jones, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
A big swing on Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 176, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Somehow Cornelius Johnson was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid up for Frank Gore Jr. at pick 215 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They jumped the gun on Joshua Cephus, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
