Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bills checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bills reached some 74 spots for Kai Kroeger, and value like that does not grow back.
Getting Shough where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker. On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Omarion Hampton
In the Round 1 slot they get a featured back at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick56
Rnd2
Trey Amos
Trey Amos in Round 2, Pick 24 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick62
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at pick 62 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in slot 109 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 132 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick169
Rnd5
Chase Lundt
By-the-book stuff, Chase Lundt at the 169th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They paid a round early for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 170, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough at Round 5, Pick 35 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick177
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in slot 177 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick206
Rnd6
Kai Kroeger
They talked themselves into Kai Kroeger at pick 206, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
