Draft Grade — Steelers

A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Steelers get a C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Nathaniel Watson in No. 178. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

It is not that Van Pran is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

Hit on Amarius Mims and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In pick No. 28 they get a blindside protector. More want than need.
Pick51 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sedrick Van Pran at offensive lineman with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick60 Rnd2 Malachi Corley
No drama and no debate, Malachi Corley went about where he belonged in No. 60. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick98 Rnd3 Andru Phillips
No edge and no loss on Andru Phillips in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick119 Rnd4 Justin Eboigbe
They reached into another round for Justin Eboigbe, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick178 Rnd6 Nathaniel Watson
A big swing on Nathaniel Watson at the 178th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick195 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
