Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Nussmeier, and a B-, for the Steelers. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Garrett Nussmeier is the Steelers' quarterback, full stop. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The Mateer value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Easter has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Garrett Nussmeier
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt in No. 52 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cayden Green
They jumped the gun on Cayden Green, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick83
Rnd3
John Mateer
John Mateer at pick 83 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A quiet steal in pick No. 121: D'Angelo Ponds for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price at slot 133 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at the 160th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick212
Rnd6
Drayk Bowen
Drayk Bowen at No. 212 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick213
Rnd6
Tree Babalade
Tree Babalade at pick 213 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick218
Rnd7
Shamar Easter
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shamar Easter well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick235
Rnd7
James Smith
The board had cheaper options than James Smith at pick No. 235, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
