The Patriots drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: B. The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Milton III has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Bertrand to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the 5th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 2, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick37
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 37th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick68
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
They paid sticker price for Devontez Walker in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in No. 69; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick103
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
They jumped the gun on Leonard Taylor III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick137
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 137 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick140
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
A conviction pick on Luke McCaffrey at slot 140 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick180
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Good price on Tanor Bortolini in the 193rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick231
Rnd7
JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand in Round 7, Pick 11 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
