Draft Grade — Bills

The Bills lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Bills spent slot 162 on Drake Nugent, a name most had 48 spots down the list.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
The Wilson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The roster is better shaped than it was, with linebacker chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brian Thomas Jr.. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick35
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
No edge and no loss on Darius Robinson in slot 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick60
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
They took Bralen Trice at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick72
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
A quiet steal in pick 72: Payton Wilson for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick99
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
A conviction pick on Leonard Taylor III at No. 99 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 128th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
A tidy little value on Jarrian Jones in slot 143, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in the 154th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick155
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at pick 155 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 24. The roster fit checks out.
Pick162
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at pick No. 162 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
