Draft Grade — Bills
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureC+
The Bills bled value on every deal, hence the D-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bills would have aced it. Drake Nugent at pick 163 is 47 spots clear of where he belonged. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Baker.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 28th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at the 44th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick60
Rnd2
Bralen Trice
They took Bralen Trice at par in Round 2, Pick 28, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick99
Rnd3
Javon Baker
Javon Baker is a better player than pick 99 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick112
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
McKinnley Jackson
They paid sticker price for McKinnley Jackson in slot 121, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
They went early on Jarrian Jones in the 128th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in Round 5, Pick 18 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick155
Rnd5
Isaiah Davis
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaiah Davis. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at No. 160 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick163
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
They reached a country mile for Drake Nugent at slot 163, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
A slide stopped in pick 189, with Ty'Ron Hopper worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
