astralslide DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

NeedB+

FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Stone Handy at pick 238 is 124 spots clear of where he belonged. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. However the rest shakes out, Henderson at that price is a win they earned.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In No. 4 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in the Round 2 slot, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick69
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 69. It fills a real need, too.
Pick77
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 77th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick106
Rnd4
Tory Horton
No drama and no debate, Tory Horton went about where he belonged in the 106th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
The board had cheaper options than Bhayshul Tuten at Round 5, Pick 6, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
They took Seth McLaughlin at par in the 171st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd7
Robert Longerbeam
A straight-up fair deal on Robert Longerbeam at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick238
Rnd7
Stone Handy
Value said wait; Stone Handy in the 238th pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
