Draft Grade — Broncos
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
The Broncos worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Broncos took Emani Bailey at Round 6, Pick 32, roughly 55 spots before his name belonged. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That Wilson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Melton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A slide stopped in slot 41, with Jackson Powers-Johnson worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick48
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in the 48th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cade Stover
By-the-book stuff, Cade Stover at pick No. 76 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick84
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 20 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
They jumped the gun on Khyree Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick90
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick91
Rnd3
Max Melton
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Max Melton while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick93
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in the 93rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving at Round 3, Pick 31 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick101
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 101st overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick103
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mohamed Kamara. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster in pick 121 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick136
Rnd4
Nehemiah Pritchett
A want over a need in No. 136: Nehemiah Pritchett adds a cornerback while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick142
Rnd5
Christian Jones
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Jones in pick No. 142. The roster fit checks out.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jacob Cowing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Brennan Jackson
Brennan Jackson at Round 5, Pick 10 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jamari Thrash
They let Jamari Thrash come to them and pounced at No. 147. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick174
Rnd5
Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau slipping to pick No. 174 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
No drama and no debate, Jared Wiley went about where he belonged in the 203rd pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick207
Rnd6
Emani Bailey
Emani Bailey in the 207th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
