Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureF
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

If Campbell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with quarterback and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Cooper Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Kadyn Proctor
In slot 16 they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick17 Rnd1 Cashius Howell
In No. 17 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. More want than need.
Pick20 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40 Rnd2 Colton Hood
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Colton Hood at pick No. 40 is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick49 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
They let Sonny Styles come to them and pounced at the 49th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101 Rnd4 Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick109 Rnd4 Caden Curry
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and interior defensive lineman to take Caden Curry, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick112 Rnd4 Jack Endries
Jack Endries at pick 112 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Pick141 Rnd5 J'Mari Taylor
J'Mari Taylor in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick143 Rnd5 Jaden Greathouse
No edge and no loss on Jaden Greathouse in Round 5, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick145 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
A wild overpay on DJ Campbell in the 145th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick147 Rnd5 Kevin Coleman Jr.
Kevin Coleman Jr. in pick No. 147 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick148 Rnd5 Jalen Stroman
Jalen Stroman at slot 148 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick151 Rnd5 Domani Jackson
No drama and no debate, Domani Jackson went about where he belonged in No. 151. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153 Rnd5 Kyle Louis
By-the-book stuff, Kyle Louis at pick 153 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick161 Rnd5 Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the 161st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177 Rnd5 Pat Coogan
A straight-up fair deal on Pat Coogan at pick 177, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195 Rnd6 Josh Cuevas
The board had cheaper options than Josh Cuevas at slot 195, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick207 Rnd6 J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in the 207th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jerry Wilson
Jerry Wilson in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick221 Rnd7 Anthony Evans III
Anthony Evans III at Round 7, Pick 5 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
