Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureB
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

The 49ers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took DeMonte Capehart at the Round 6 slot regardless, 62 picks early. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at the Round 1 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick64 Rnd2 Brenden Rice
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in pick No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick68 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at slot 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at No. 85 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick95 Rnd3 Bucky Irving
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick98 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kris Abrams-Draine this early at Round 3, Pick 35. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127 Rnd4 James Williams
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in pick 127. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick132 Rnd4 McCallan Castles
They talked themselves into McCallan Castles at the 132nd pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick177 Rnd6 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at pick No. 177 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick210 Rnd6 Myles Jones
By-the-book stuff, Myles Jones at No. 210 squarely in line with his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick213 Rnd6 DeMonte Capehart
A big swing on DeMonte Capehart at the 213th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
