Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Texans: B. There is reaching, and then there is Eric Gentry at pick 252. The Texans jumped the board by 89 and dared it to prove them wrong.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Love pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The veteran additions, Jeffery Simmons chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the 24th pick they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. at slot 39 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick54
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Slaughter at No. 54. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick55
Rnd2
Connor Lew
Value with a capital V on Connor Lew in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick67
Rnd3
Dillon Thieneman
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dillon Thieneman in Round 3, Pick 3. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick85
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
A clean, defensible pick in the 85th overall pick with a little surplus value in Eli Stowers. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick113
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
They took Zachariah Branch at par in pick No. 113, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore in No. 115 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick154
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Rayshaun Benny well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick229
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at the 229th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick232
Rnd7
James Williams Sr.
Value said wait; James Williams Sr. in pick 232 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry in Round 7, Pick 38 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
