A weekend the Buccaneers spent ahead of the board, for worse: F. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Buccaneers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
Boyd has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They will answer for taking S-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots went begging.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Simpson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 26 they get a blindside protector, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at the 58th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick94
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 31. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Roman Wilson in the 98th overall pick, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jalyx Hunt adds a S-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick132
Rnd4
Khristian Boyd
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Khristian Boyd. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jaylin Simpson
Circle this one: Jaylin Simpson at pick 176 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick257
Rnd7
Isaac Guerendo
Value said wait; Isaac Guerendo in No. 257 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
