FutureB-
The phones sank the Buccaneers this weekend: D+. Nobody else had DeMonte Capehart anywhere near pick 220. The Buccaneers did, by 172 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Hunt is a bad player; it is that the Buccaneers had louder needs to answer first.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In No. 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick64
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
A reach for Cooper Beebe in the 64th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick73
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
They paid sticker price for Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95
Rnd3
James Williams
They reached a country mile for James Williams at slot 95, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick99
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at pick 99 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
A want over a need in pick No. 124: Jalyx Hunt adds a S-EDGE while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick178
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
A reach on Steele Chambers in pick No. 178; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick200
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wiley. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick220
Rnd6
DeMonte Capehart
They left a pile of value on the table to take DeMonte Capehart this early at No. 220. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick222
Rnd7
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones in the 222nd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick246
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
A straight-up fair deal on Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 246th pick, value and slot in agreement. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
