Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The Dolphins drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Every board in the league had Leigh lower, and that gap is the story. The Dolphins indulged a want in Ponds while a need in edge rusher, tight end and other spots stayed open.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Getting Kilgore where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Fernando Mendoza
In slot 4 they get the face of the franchise, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Isaiah World
Isaiah World in No. 37 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick65 Rnd3 Elijah Sarratt
They read the board right and Elijah Sarratt was the payoff at the 65th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick68 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
By-the-book stuff, A'Mauri Washington at pick 68 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75 Rnd3 Will Lee III
Will Lee III at the 75th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick89 Rnd3 Cayden Green
No drama and no debate, Cayden Green went about where he belonged in pick No. 89. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95 Rnd3 Harold Perkins Jr.
They took Harold Perkins Jr. at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick105 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, D'Angelo Ponds adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick144 Rnd5 Jalon Kilgore
A safety of that caliber at the 144th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick218 Rnd7 Tristan Leigh
A big swing on Tristan Leigh at No. 218, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
