Best value of the weekend goes to the Bills for Ransom: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bills were there to profit. Lathan Ransom, the No. 109 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 171st overall pick.
Reaching for Mastromanno left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a wrecking ball inside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau at pick No. 56 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick62
Rnd2
Tre Harris
Tre Harris at pick 62 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick108
Rnd4
Jalen Milroe
Good price on Jalen Milroe in No. 108, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick131
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
By-the-book stuff, Darius Alexander at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
A safety of that caliber at slot 171 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick175
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
Andres Borregales at the 175th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick179
Rnd6
Alex Mastromanno
Value said wait; Alex Mastromanno in the 179th overall pick says they were not listening. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick206
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, JJ Pegues in slot 206, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick208
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the 208th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
