Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB
The Cowboys left with their quarterback, and a D to match.

You could see the war room lean forward. Smael Mondon Jr. at pick No. 144 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.

The Walley pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The whole projection now runs through Cam Ward; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Jerry Jeudy leading the way.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In the 6th overall pick they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick11 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In No. 11 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. in No. 35 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick41 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at the 41st pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick42 Rnd2 Nic Scourton
A reach on Nic Scourton in slot 42; the board had better options right there. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick75 Rnd3 Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at Round 3, Pick 11 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick144 Rnd5 Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at pick 144 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
A big swing on Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 149, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick169 Rnd5 Deone Walker
Somehow Deone Walker was still sitting there in the 169th overall pick, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick170 Rnd5 Donovan Jackson
They paid sticker price for Donovan Jackson in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick179 Rnd6 Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at Round 6, Pick 4 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick186 Rnd6 Le'Veon Moss
Steal is underselling it; Le'Veon Moss at No. 186 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209 Rnd6 Justin Walley
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Justin Walley well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick220 Rnd7 Nic Anderson
They reached a country mile for Nic Anderson at pick No. 220, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
