Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Williams, and a D-, for the Bears. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Bears, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Bullard has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 9th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard at pick No. 43 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick74
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
They went early on Gabriel Murphy in No. 74, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in slot 75; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine at the 111th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick 123 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick143
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in Round 5, Pick 7 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
