FutureA
Best value of the weekend goes to the Jets for Fitzgerald: B. Somebody in the Round 6 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Jets sat still while Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 117 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The Thornton Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
With quarterback, cornerback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on tight end is the choice that costs them. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren slipping to Round 1, Pick 25 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in the 42nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach No. 58 and blink. They did not. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick89
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at the 89th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick92
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
Circle this one: Dylan Sampson at slot 92 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick108
Rnd4
Elijah Arroyo
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went tight end with Elijah Arroyo while clear needs at quarterback, cornerback and other spots sat open.
Pick144
Rnd5
Rylie Mills
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Rylie Mills. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick155
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 155 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick184
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick206
Rnd6
Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 206 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
