Good, not great, for the Jaguars: B-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Brandon Coleman, 61 picks early at slot 117.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball. A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick48
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 48th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick84
Rnd3
Josh Newton
They paid sticker price for Josh Newton in pick 84, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick96
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
They paid up for Leonard Taylor III at slot 96 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick115
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick117
Rnd4
Brandon Coleman
A wild overpay on Brandon Coleman in the 117th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick152
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylan Ford well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick195
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A premium they did not need to pay, Christian Jones a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wiley at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick234
Rnd7
Mark Perry
Mark Perry at No. 234 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
