The phones sank the Bills this weekend: C-. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Bills started one anyway for Kyle Williams, 62 picks ahead of schedule.
They banked enough surplus on Shough to cover a lot of smaller sins. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Hit on Nick Emmanwori and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick No. 21 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick30
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill hitter at safety, and a steal at that.
Pick62
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in pick 62 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick109
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
A real head-scratcher, Kyle Williams in No. 109 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cody Simon
A clean, defensible pick in the 132nd pick with a little surplus value in Cody Simon. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick169
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They went early on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 169, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
A straight-up fair deal on Willie Lampkin at slot 170, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick173
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
They barely believed it either: Bhayshul Tuten still on the board at Round 5, Pick 35. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177
Rnd6
Tyler Shough
Circle this one: Tyler Shough at No. 177 is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick206
Rnd6
Jackson Hawes
Jackson Hawes at the 206th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
